Although time sprang forward last weekend, we may still be feeling the effects of the precious lost time. With our constantly busy lives, it may be getting harder to balance our dental health. To help, we have compiled a quick list of simple tips to help keep your teeth clean for the in-between meal times and when you and your family are on the go.
One: Healthy Snacking
Did you know that frequent snacking on improper snacks throughout the day not only contributes to added pounds but can also contribute to tooth decay? If you derive energy from snacking throughout the day, choose tooth-friendly snacks, such as broccoli, carrots, seeds, nuts, or apples. Because of their grainy texture, these foods act as natural toothbrushes, scrubbing your teeth as you chew and removing bacteria and plaque. Plus! These are also excellent choices when finishing off a meal!
Two: Brush and Floss On-the-Go
This tip may be the most obvious, but one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay and dental disease is to brush and floss often! That said, we understand that not everyone has the time to make a trip to the bathroom to brush their teeth after every meal.
If you are on the go, here is an easy, quick tip to brush and floss your teeth even if you do not have toothpaste!
Carry a travel toothbrush with you and when you feel plaque or food on your teeth, pull it out and brush! Even without the added benefits of toothpaste, this will help remove plaque and bacteria sticking to your teeth.
As for flossing tips, many of our patients have invested in those fantastic quick, handy floss picks. Because of their easy-to-use handle, you can use them one-handed and without a mirror. This portable tip will make flossing between meals much easier and more accessible!
Three: Drink Plenty of Water and Chew Sugar-Free Gum
Grab a stick of sugarless gum. Chewing increases the saliva flow in your mouth, which washes away food particles and neutralizes the acids. The saliva also promotes remineralization, helping teeth to recover from any damage incurred while eating.
Grab a Glass or Bottle of Water. Similar to saliva, water washes away food debris and helps clean between your teeth. Rinsing your mouth frequently, especially after eating, is an easy way to bolster your teeth’s defense against cavity-causing bacteria.
A Little Effort Goes Along Way
At Grove Smiles Dentistry in Coconut Grove, FL, we know life gets busy, but by taking care of your teeth throughout the day, not just in the morning and at night, you can ensure that your smile will be healthy for a lifetime.
