Why Is Mouth So Dry?
Dry mouth or the reduction of saliva can occur for numerous reasons and is a common problem among older adults. It is often a potential side effect of various medications (prescribed and over-the-counter). Among them are antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, high blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, drugs for urinary incontinence, Parkinson’s disease medications, antidepressants, and many others. Unfortunately, another knock-on effect is that without the cleansing benefits of saliva, tooth decay and other oral health problems become more common.
Common Oral Problems Associated With Dry Mouth
Some of the common problems related to dry mouth include a constant sore throat, burning sensation, problems speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or dry nasal passages. The excessive dryness irritates the soft tissues in the mouth, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection. This problem is particularly found in patients using oral inhalers for asthma. Those who use asthma inhalers may develop oral candidiasis, an oral fungal infection, and should remember to rinse their mouths with water after using the inhaler.
Line In The Sand Fact
Dry mouth left untreated will damage your teeth; because without adequate saliva to lubricate your mouth, wash away food, and neutralize the acids produced by plaque, considerable decay can occur.
