When we think of emergencies, we often think of life-threatening injuries or trips to the emergency room for broken bones and stitches.
Now, what about our dental emergencies?
Unfortunately, accidents can happen and most often do when we least expect them to happen. However, when those accidents involve tooth damage, knowing who to call and what steps to take is important.
Just being prepared before a dental emergency can save a damaged or knocked-out tooth, prevent infection, and decrease the need for extensive long-term treatment.
Your Dentist On Speed Dial
One of the most important steps to being well-prepared for a dental emergency is establishing a dentist as the “go-to” in a crisis. This action means locating a dental practice that is right for you and developing a friendly professional relationship.
When you have found a dental practice that you are comfortable with, become familiar with their hours and know where to reach them if you ever need emergency services. It will be most important that if the worst happens unexpectedly, you can count on your fantastic dentist and preferred dental practice to provide high-quality care, advice, and support.
Be Prepared
We all know accidents happen. Being “prepared” means knowing what to do in certain situations before a mishap occurs. For example, in a dental emergency, time is of the essence and could mean the difference between saving or losing a tooth.
In Case of a 911
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), here’s how you should handle these dental emergencies:
Loss of Baby Tooth
If your child happens to knock out a baby tooth, contact a dentist as soon as possible. The tooth will most likely not be replanted, but the dentist must check for potential damage to the developing permanent tooth underneath.
A Permanent Fractured or Chipped Tooth
One of the most common occurrences as an adult is to fracture or chip a permanent tooth. If we chip or crack a tooth, contact a dentist immediately, as prompt treatment is required. In the meantime, rinse out your mouth with water and find any broken tooth fragments. Then, place the pieces in cold milk or water and bring them with you to the dentist.
A Permanent Tooth is Knocked Out
Again, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention quickly from a dentist. Most knocked-out teeth can be saved if a dentist is seen within 30 minutes to an hour of the accident.
In the meantime, find the tooth and rinse it gently with only cold water without scrubbing or cleaning it. Next, place the tooth back in the socket, and hold it there with clean gauze or a washcloth. If you cannot put the tooth back in the socket, place the tooth in a container of cold milk, saliva, or water.
