Most of us Floridians can agree that we love the warm weather and that we need only to go down the road to enjoy a vacation. With the kids out of school and the snowbird traffic fully transitioning to summer holiday traffic, some of you may be thinking about summer vacation plans. While vacations are an opportunity to relax, your dental health should still be a priority as plaque does not take a holiday.

Today, the expert team of Grove Smiles of Dr. Stephen J. Parr your Coconut Grove Dentist is here to provide great dental tips to maintain your oral health routines while on vacation.

Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush

When on vacation make sure to stick to your dental hygiene routine. Continue to brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss daily. Carry travel-sized packets of floss or dental picks in your purse or pocket if you will be out for most of the day. If you’re traveling by plane, a collapsible toothbrush or travel size toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and a roll of floss will fit into a ziplock that fits nicely into your purse or carry-on luggage.

Schedule A Dental Checkup Before You Go!

Add to your vacation checklist to schedule a dental exam before your vacation. Dr. Parr can detect problems before you may experience any symptoms, and any necessary treatment can be taken care of before you leave. Almost nothing could ruin a great vacation than a sore mouth.

If you plan on participating in any sports or activities where there is a strong chance for contact with other participants or hard surfaces — ask him about a mouth guard.

Preparation Is Key!

Do your research before your trip on the dentists and the dental care available in the area where you will be staying. Get the contact information for local dentists and phone ahead for information on their office hours; or, call us at Grove Smiles Dentistry and we may be able to recommend a dentist in that area. The preparation ahead will save you precious time in case of a dental emergency.

Healthy Bites

Indulging in sweet and sticky foods while on vacation may be fun, but try to minimize the amount you consume. Keep those smores around the campfire to a minimum. Best bet? Stick to fruits and vegetables as they contain the essential vitamins and minerals teeth, and gums need to stay strong and healthy.

Plus! Make sure to drink plenty of water, every day. It is the best way to stay hydrated, no matter if you’re sitting on a beach or hiking in the hills.

Use Sunblock

Make sure to get out and enjoy the scenery and activities, but make sure to wear your sunblock. Although moderate exposure to sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D, which is used by the body to absorb calcium and phosphorous which help to keep teeth and bones strong; prolonged exposure to the sun without proper protection can increase your risk of cancers, including to the lips and the mouth. To best guard use a lip balm that contains protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Most Importantly Enjoy and Have Fun!
